All About Us

Welcome to the World of Paige 23
Paige 23 is dedicated to authenticity in winemaking. We make wines for an aesthetic experience. We let our vineyards tell the story with each wine expressing and exemplifying that particular variety from our area. We offer Syrah from our estate JK Vineyard, as well as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. |
 |
Philosophy of Winemaking
Paige 23 is dedicated to true regional varietal expression with an accent on minimal interference. We select the best vines from small crops and practice rigorous winemaking and cellar practices. Our teamwork within our partnership represents an amalgam of experience, each bringing his expertise in creating a fine wine. |

Joe Kalina, a retired artist, began
planting JK Vineyard in 1989 with Chardonnay and Syrah vines. His
love of farming became his avocation. After attending classes at
the University
of California at Davis,
his interest in producing premium wine grapes intensified. He created
the label of JK Vineyard and business began. Both Joe and his wife
Jackie live on, and farm the vineyard in the fruitful hills of Santa
Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County, well known for the Rhone and
Burgundy wine grapes grown in the area. |
 |
Chris Keller, is a well-known wine consultant
(Joe's Restaurant, Table 8, Chadwick and L'Ermitage Hotel) in Los Angeles with
his wife Hanh. He has worked with the best chefs of Los Angeles , as well as
world-renowned winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett, on distributing her
own
La Sirena label. This has taught him that great wine should be made to
accompany great foods, not overwhelm them!
Upon meeting and becoming friends with Joe, a partnership of "field
and finesse" was born. The wines he and Joe would set out to make
would be elegant and crisp. They envisioned their wines to express true
varietal characteristics, not wanting to mask the grapes natural acids
and flavors with malolactic fermentation, overpowering new oak
and high alcohol. |

What's In a Name?
Two metaphors of love |
| |
|
As befitting their philosophy of an aesthetic experience, so too
is the genesis of their wine label. Joe and Chris each tell their
own story and entrust you to select one that appeals to your sensibility. |
| |
Joe named the wine after his daughter, Paige, a unique name 40
years ago when she was born.
The number 23 refers to his wife Jackie's birthdate, and thus
recognizing the two most important women in his life. Chris, being
the more poetic of the two, happened upon a quote from a version
of the Rubaiyat . . .
It was on page 23! |
Drink wine, this is life eternal.
This, all that life can give to you.
It is the season for wine, roses, and drunken friends.
Be happy for this moment,
This moment is your life. |
